Lesvos is a popular destination for Religious Pilgrimages Monuments of centuries-old Byzantine monuments, ecclesiastic architecture and art, the churches and monasteries give testimony to Lesvos’ rich religious heritage.  The most well-known pilgrimages to Lesvos are to:
  • Taxiarchis (Archangel Michael) Monastery in Mantamados which is renowned for its icon of Taxiarchis, made by the only surviving monk from a battle that took place between pirates who came to rob the Monastery and its monks. The icon was made from the earth and blood of the slain monks that died during the battle on the grounds of the monastery.
  • The Monastery of Agios Raphael (St.Raphael) near Mytilene and
  • The Church of Our Lady of the Holy Virgin (Assumption) in Agiasos. People come from all over the world and Greece to pay tribute to the saints by conducting a pilgrimage during which many walk from different parts of the island to the monasteries in order to light a candle.
  • The celebration of Agios Ignatios at Leimonos Monastery in the Kalloni region.
  • The celebration of Agios Charalampos in Agia Paraskevi (also in Mantamados and Napi).
