Lesvos has also been established one of the best birdwatching locations in Europe, especially in springtime. With 56 natural wetlands and 7 man-made. There are two characteristics that make Lesvos unique for birds in comparison to other islands of the Aegean Sea: the big variety of habitats and its position in eastern Mediterranean. Approximately 1500 plant species and 325 bird species have been recorded on the island that arrive from Europe, Asia and Africa. In spring and autumn during bird migration, the view is definitely impressive. The birds we come across are the flamingos, striking with their pink feathers, the black stork, the pied avocet, the black-winged stilt, the ruddy shelduck, the white stork, the European shag and many more.

Rare and unique flora and fauna: Did you know that Lesvos has more than 500 different species of bees on the island, rare pine trees, Rhododendron and orchids, ancient olive trees that are more than 1000 years old? That you can find breeding and nesting grounds for protected bird species, like the yellow-beaked seagull on the little islet of St. George near the traditional village of Petra? Lesvos is also home to the red-furred chipmunk –the “Sciurus Anomalus”.
